Business Crime

In August 2003 Hazel Blears, the then Home Office Minister with responsibility for Crime Reduction, set out a programme of work to tackle Business Crime, including a dedicated Business Crime Team in London. The term "business crime" does not only relate to crimes against business but also the role that business can play in reducing the opportunities for crime in the wider community.

Crimes against business include criminal damage, burglary, shoplifting, vehicle related crimes, e-crimes and anti-social behaviour. Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs) have great influence in bringing about improved safety, security and reductions in crime. By improving the links with CDRPs, business interest can be more effectively integrated into the crime agenda, implementing measures to reduce retail crime.

The Business community make many contributions to reducing crime. Business-led schemes such as Safer Business areas, Pub Watch, Shop Watch and Truck Watch are all excellent examples of the investment made to reduce crime and the employment of ex-offenders is a further demonstration of how businesses are making a positive contribution to the community.

Delivery managers in GOYH drive the business crime agenda within the region.

Fraud Forum

The Yorkshire & Humber Fraud Forum (YHFF) is a relatively new initiative for this region, having only been launched in 2006. The YHFF builds on the lessons learned and the model used by the North East Fraud Forum (NEFF), the first fraud forum of this type in the country.

The aim of YHFF is to try and address business crime fraud throughout this region. Supported by GOYH, a steering committee with membership drawn from the private sector as well as three of the Regions Police Forces meets regularly.

The high profile Launch Conference took place at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Leeds on 9 November 2006 with a number of presentations from speakers with expertise in the subject area including money laundering, terrorism and cyber-crime. Please see the link below for further information about the YHFF.
