Early Education
All three and four year olds are now guaranteed a free, part time (12 ½ hours per week), early education place. There are plans to extend the number of hours to 15 by 2010 and to 20 by 2015. Three Local Authorities in the region are testing out flexibilities in the free entitlement.
There are plans to extend the free entitlement to cover two year olds in order to support long term improvements in outcomes for children. Pilot projects are exploring practical ways of reaching out to the most disadvantaged families, particularly those groups who do not take up the free entitlement when the child is aged three, and promoting the value of pre-school experiences. Four Local Authorities in Yorkshire and The Humber, namely Barnsley, Bradford, Doncaster and Hull are piloting different approaches.
