Beacon Councils

The Beacon Council Scheme recognises good practice and aims to raise standards in all councils by providing a national framework for sharing best practice with other local authorities. Each year a number of direct service and crosscutting service areas are chosen for the award of beacon status. Authorities that are awarded Beacon status are given funding to share best practice with others, over a period of three years following the award.

GOYH reports on the performance of local councils in the relevant service area that they are applying for Beacon status. This information is used as part of the assessment of a Beacon application. The final decision on awarding Beacon Council status is made by Government Ministers, based on the recommendations of an independent advisory panel.  GOYH attend the Beacon assessment meetings carried out by the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) and the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG).

Support by GOYH is given to Beacon Councils who have applied under the Beacon Council Peer Support Fund. This fund is available to those Beacon authorities who wish to deliver additional dissemination activity.

The CLG Beacon Council Scheme website link below gives details of the councils in the region with Beacon status.
