Funding boost to help South Yorkshire schoolchildren get involved in the fight against global poverty

Published: Thu, 08 May 2008 09:43:25

Schoolchildren in South Yorkshire will get a chance to join the fight against global poverty thanks to new Government funding announced today.

A Derbyshire charity which helps local school children identify with African youngsters and a Derby based project to train youth workers on global issues are among 26 new projects sharing a £5.5m Government funding boost, Secretary of State for International Development Douglas Alexander announced today.

The new Development Awareness Fund (DAF) will back 26 new projects designed to help more people - from schoolchildren to community and faith groups - get personally involved in fighting global poverty.

Bakewell-based Village Aid Ltd is receiving £148,000 over three years to help youngsters in rural schools across four counties (South Yorkshire, Derbyshire, North Staffordshire and Cheshire) the chance to learn about African children, share experiences and help dispel some of the myths about poverty.
